Ghost Walk Oct 13 & 14

Each year in cooperation with ECHNA’s annual Ghost Walk, Elizabeth City Downtown, Inc. hosts an Italian Dinner Fundraiser. The only difference is the location of the dinner. “We change locations each year,” says Tim Williams, Chairman of the ECDI Board of Directors, “The event is not only about the food and raising money for downtown revitalization efforts; it’s also about partnering with our downtown property owners. We choose a vacant restaurant space in downtown, and with the help of many volunteers, clean it up, spiff it up, and set it up as an operating restaurant for two days only.” It’s a win-win proposition if the event raises funds AND helps to fill an empty space by providing the extra exposure. Bill and Brenda Ashburn of Hintonsville Rentals have allowed ECDI the use of an iconic space for the event.

The October 13 and 14 dinner will be served from 5:00 until 9:00 pm at the former Oxena Newsstand location in the historic Alkrama Theatre Building at 108A N. McMorrine Street (just around the corner from Ghost Walk Headquarters at Arts of the Albemarle). Long-timers in Elizabeth City will remember the location as a diner, newsstand, and social gathering place. It was famous for its Oxaburger; “The best hamburger around,” according to former owner Deborah Bulliner. “We would mix 50 pounds or more of the special hamburger recipe fresh every morning.” The location has also been home to The Judges Chambers and Nancy’s Soul Food Restaurant.

“Oxaburgers won’t be on the menu for the fundraiser,” says Deborah Malenfant ECDI Director. “Patrons can expect to enjoy a delicious Italian Dinner of spaghetti and lasagna, salad, dessert, and a drink, with an extra side of nostalgia, ghosts and history.” Beer and wine will be available for purchase. Dinner tickets are only $8.00 each and are available for purchase at ECDI Office, Page After Page Bookstore, Bryon’s Hot Dog Stand, and MMT Printers.
